June 1944 - Alwin Sommerfeld Hides Message in Bottle 01/26/2012

A letter (I have the translated text) was hidden in a bottle as Russia troops advanced on the Sommerfeld farm in June 1944.  Alwin Sommerfeld was in his late 50's at the time and all his children were at war.  He hid the note in a bottle and walled it up in a fence.  It was discovered in 1999 during a renovation and sent to the museum in Nowy Dwor Gdanski (Polan) in 2011.

The following story was published in a local newspaper and brought to my attention via Facebook.

The letter threw the bottle closed and walled up in a pillar of the fence.Currently living in this place Kadziewiczów family was a letter in September 1999 during renovation and replacement of the fence. With a partial translation of the letter submitted by Anna Kadzieiwcz to museum collections show that the author of the letter is the owner of the farm in Grossmausdorf (Myszewo), probably named Sommerfeldt. The letter was written in blue ink, kaligrafowanymi letters, in German.Document for decades stuck in a glass bottle buried with a brick fence of the farm. The date in the list - June 1944 - suggests that at that time was also hidden. - Some text is faded and illegible - says Anna Kadziewicz . - For eleven years the document was in the family collection. Never in that time our house is not eager to visit pre-war inhabitants, so there was no occasion to show someone found a letter from a close family, or former neighbors Sommerfeldt.

Due to the pre-war calligraphy pieces of text, even those little damaged, are difficult to decipher and translate.
- Letter show to someone who can read the writing style - says Paulina Strzalkowska of Zulawski Historical Park. - For the New Manor House and Museum Gd former inhabitants still coming, so you can take advantage of their knowledge. Maybe that will be able to cull more information from this letter.
